Multi-material overmolding for production parts
Plastimold provides custom plastic overmolding—adding an outer layer (often TPU/TPE or elastomer) to a prepared substrate so the result is one molded assembly, not a glued afterthought. Buyers come here for multi-material process depth under our custom plastic injection molding hub: soft-touch grips, seals, strain relief, cable ends, electronics shells, and tool interfaces that have to repeat shot after shot.
When your program needs a single-material molded part first, start on the Custom IM hub and we map whether overmolding belongs in the same tool plan.
We review geometry, volumes, hardness, color, cosmetics, and end-use conditions together so the substrate and overmold are designed as one system—not two vendors fighting a bond line after the fact.
Overmolding process (substrate + overmold)
A dependable overmold starts with a dependable interface. We prefer mechanical bonding: substrate grooves, recesses, undercuts, holes, ribs, and controlled surface geometry so the overmold material locks on. The substrate and overmold are designed together—shrinkage, draft, wall thickness, gate location, cooling, and part removal treated as one process window. This is not an adhesive-led shortcut. Documented process settings and inspection criteria keep the bond line and cosmetics auditable across lots.
Materials & applications (TPU/TPE and beyond)
Material selection balances flexibility, hardness, abrasion resistance, chemical exposure, temperature range, color, and bond to the substrate. Common overmold choices include TPU and TPE grades suited to soft-touch, sealing, and cable protection. Substrate families follow the Custom IM materials conversation (engineering and commodity resins).

Design, tooling & production consistency
DFM matters when two materials and a bond line must repeat. We review wall transitions, radii, shutoffs, vents, draft, tolerances, parting lines, and where soft material sits relative to functional surfaces—plus how the substrate is loaded, oriented, supported, and checked during the cycle.
Program benefits stay engineer-framed: fewer secondary assembly steps versus some adhesive workflows, color-impregnated plastics that do not rely on paint, and texture where grip matters.
Overmolding vs insert molding
Overmolding and insert molding both combine molded plastic with another component, but they solve different problems. Send the part model plus substrate or insert notes and service conditions—we compare bond strategy, tooling complexity, cycle expectations, and inspection needs before you commit to a mold.

Insert
molded parts
Insert molding
Prefer for metal or component inserts molded into plastic—threads, bushings, and structural interfaces without a second soft outer layer.

Overmold
injection molding
Overmolding
Prefer for soft/hard multi-material layers for grip, seal, isolation, or soft-touch—outer material bonded over a prepared substrate.
Quality & CNC support
Quality is built through design review, material traceability, first-article planning, dimensional checks, and clear acceptance criteria. When a project needs tight substrate dimensions, secondary machining, fixtures, or coordinated machined components, CNC machining supports molds, fixtures, and precision handoffs alongside molding.
