Insert molding for production parts

Plastimold provides custom insert molding—placing metal or other component inserts into the mold so plastic encapsulates or locates them in one shot. We specialize in threaded bosses, bushings, pins, electrical contacts, and structural interfaces that must hold position and performance across production lots.

Advantages of Insertmolding

Strength at the interface

Molded-in metal and component inserts create durable load paths, fastening points, and structural interfaces that secondary press-in operations often cannot match.

Fewer assembly steps

Encapsulate threads, bushings, pins, and hardware in the shot—reducing secondary fastening, adhesive work, and handling risk on the line.

Precision location

Insert support, gate strategy, and shrinkage control keep critical features on datum so lots stay consistent through production.

Sealed-in hardware

Plastic flow around prepared inserts can lock retention features, knurls, and undercuts in place for insulation, cosmetics, or structural support.

Insert molding process (molded-in inserts)

Insert molding places a prepared insert into the cavity (or onto a core/fixture), then injects plastic so the resin flows around the insert and locks it in place as the part cools. Success depends on insert location, support against resin pressure, gate strategy, and shrinkage so critical features stay on datum. Typical handoffs mirror Custom IM discipline: DFM → tooling for reliable insert loading → T1 → FAI → production with in-process checks.

Insert DFM

Design insert and plastic geometry together—retention, knit lines, sink, draft, and shutoffs that keep flash off threads and mating faces.

Prep & load

Cleanliness, coatings, knurls, undercuts, and nest design for reliable manual or automated insert loading before the shot.

Mold

Inject around the supported insert with a controlled fill window so resin encapsulates without shifting critical datums.

Inspect

T1 samples and FAI against print—presence, orientation, dimensional checks, and cosmetics around the insert.

Production

Approved samples gate manufacturing. In-process checks catch missing inserts, short shots, or drift before scrap scales.

Insert types & applications

Common insert types include threaded inserts and fasteners, bushings and sleeves, pins and shafts, electrical/connector elements, and stamped or machined metal components that need plastic encapsulation for insulation, cosmetics, or structural support. Component inserts beyond metal are discussed when the material and mold plan support them

Threaded metal inserts

Precision threaded fastening molded in place—bosses and fasteners without secondary press-in when the program calls for it.

Bushings & sleeves

Wear surfaces and bushings located in the cavity so plastic encapsulates the sleeve for durable interfaces.

Stamped & machined metal

Stamped or machined components encapsulated for insulation, cosmetics, or structural support—plus pins and shafts when the print requires them.

Electrical / connector

Electrical contacts and connector elements that need plastic insulation or precise location in the molded part.

Structural interfaces

Load-bearing bosses and structural interfaces designed so insert and resin share the load path across production lots.

Tools, lugs & hardware

Hardware encapsulated for handling or assembly—lugs, bolts, and tools secured inside the molded part.

Design, tooling & production consistency

DFM for insert molding focuses on how the insert is located, retained, and protected during fill—plus wall thickness, knit lines, sinks around the insert, draft, and shutoffs that keep flash off critical threads or mating faces. We review load method (manual vs automated where volumes justify it), nest design, and inspection of insert presence/orientation before the shot.

Location & retention

Load method, nest design, and inspection of insert presence/orientation before the shot—manual or automated where volumes justify it.

Knit lines & sink

Gate strategy and wall design around the insert to manage knit lines, sinks, and cosmetics without sacrificing retention.

Tooling for insert programs

Tooling is planned for access, cooling, insert changeover, maintenance, and expected volumes. A clear DFM review reduces late insert swaps and keeps launch predictable.

Insert molding vs overmolding

Both processes combine plastic with another component; they solve different design problems. Prefer insert molding (this page) for metal or component inserts molded into plastic (threads, bushings, structural interfaces). Prefer overmolding for soft/hard multi-material layers for grip, seal, isolation, or soft-touch. If you are deciding between the two—or need both in one assembly—send the part model, insert/substrate notes, and service conditions.

Choose overmolding

Prefer for soft/hard multi-material layers for grip, seal, isolation, or soft-touch—outer material bonded over a prepared substrate.

Materials for insert programs

Resin families follow the Custom IM materials conversation. We match plastic to insert and end-use during DFM. Bring your resin preferences and product requirements with the print package and we will help make it happen.

Quality & CNC support

Quality is built through design review, insert and material traceability, first-article planning, dimensional checks, and clear acceptance criteria. Plastimold maintains AS9100, ISO 9001:2015, ISO 13485, ITAR registered, and CMMC Level 2 Compliant. When inserts, nests, or molds need precision machining, CNC machining supports molds, fixtures, and metal insert prep alongside molding.
